When challenges come they are what is best for us i.e. learning curve, correct and continue and when triumphs come, we enjoy more achievements which equally build character and that is what is best for us.
If you will allow me I would like to bring you from radio silence all the way up to speed by sharing with you our journey since the late fall of last year.
Firstly, I must apologize for the prolonged radio silence that has occurred here. It was neither planned nor expected. We experienced some curve balls at the end of last year and equally amazing breakthroughs in our book business which speak to the challenges and triumphs of being in a business that comes with such certainty.
Perhaps, curve balls concentrate the mind and lead to bigger strides than one might imagine. It certainly has in our case. But then we have had a lot of help with this.
“When life throws you a curve ball, don’t let it knock you down and keep you down. Get up, re-adjust, brush yourself off, and keep it moving forward.” ~ George Bronner
Firstly, the curve balls. We had set up a campaign to bring this opportunity to more people as it has changed our lives completely and yes we were to be financially compensated for that. Being paid to help people, my favourite thing!
Even though we worked with some very talented people, after a lot of work and thousands of euro the campaign completely failed. I mean tanked utterly. It was a surprise to us and obviously disappointing as we poured ourselves emotionally, professionally and financially into this project.
Project Empowerment i.e. our social marketing campaign surrounding this opportunity came to a temporary hard stop. We had failed to reach the people we desired to help the most.
Next, Amazon changed some of their algorithms which impacted widespread stores in their larger store. This change which has since been fixed but went on for 3 months or more really effected the sales and momentum of our relatively small store.
“Failure is not to be feared. It is from failure that most growth comes.” – Dee Hock
So, when challenges come they are what is best for us i.e. learning curve, correct and continue and when triumphs come, we enjoy more achievements which equally build character and that is what is best for us.
In retrospect, this algorithm change also took care of a lot of our competition as we rode the wave and emerged unscathed. In short, everything is always working out for the best.
With this business we have found that all that is required is an internet connection and a work ethic to ensure all but certain wealth. Let me explain further.
Right when the firestorm was raging and our funds had been diminished and our store was at a temporary standstill we went to Atlanta (we live in Ireland) to meet up with our Book Arb community for their first ever live event. Talk about another game changer.
Here we met with Jon Shugart & Luke Sample in person and they far exceeded our expectations yet again in their genuineness and approach of going above and beyond to help our community. These guys have already made it and yet they showed up just to help us grow and to share all their tips and tricks with us. And to knock down even more hurdles, more on this later.
Furthermore, we met their mentors who have become our friends since and we didn’t just meet them, we spent the entire weekend with them learning from the best of the best how to make even more money in this business.
“Find a great mentor, someone who has already been through the many challenges of being an entrepreneur.” ~ Jodi Levine
To me, it was like having multiple Bill Gates teach us exactly how to grow our individual businesses with specific tools that expanded our businesses there and then. Did I mention this event was free?
That weekend of collaborative wealth building was another game changer in a long line of game changing experiences on this journey. The momentum since that weekend is still being felt by us.
Into the New Year, roll on another bumper textbook season in January and more epic sales and momentum for us may be worth a mention as our recovery built up some speed.
Whilst textbooks sell all year, as I shared before in previous posts, there are three bumper seasons where hundreds of millions of students buy extra books for college courses. We know what they are looking for and where to sell them.
I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet. Whilst we were in Atlanta, Jon & Luke launched new software which expanded our ability to sell more products other than books on multiple sites.
Now, we can sell a much wider range of products using the skills we have already developed in selling books and on more sites and not just Amazon. I still love selling on Amazon but being able to sell any number of products on any number of platforms means that we can make more profits and are no longer dependent on Amazon as our only marketplace which takes care of our recent challenges. Did I mention there was no charge for this either?
Whilst we are still focusing on our bookstore right now, because we are mastering our skills in this first, our horizon is expanding before our very eyes as these opportunities are available to us and to everyone in our Book Arb community.
“I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. But many others were also in the same place. The difference was that I took action.” ~ Bill Gates
Being in the right place at the right time doing the right thing with the right people totally rocks! I love it that it’s open to everyone too as there is no elitism in our community. Anyone with an internet connection and a work ethic can be as successful as they like.
There is still more to share about the past few months in the next post but I trust you are getting a sense of how blessed we feel to be where we are and to have the ability to do what we do. It isn’t rocket science, it’s step by step wealth creation with our friends.
Next, I will share more of our experiences that are thrusting us forward to our goals and how you can do it too.
