Make The Days Count

We’ve all experienced some great challenges recently but with great challenges come great & equal benefits & opportunities.

It’s a glorious day to be alive & in this business.

The wheels are turning once again in Amazon as they always do. Fluctuations may happen but they are the titans of our online business so they are only making money in books when we buy & sell on their store!

What may be noteworthy is we had one of our best days sales ever in the middle of this recent turn of events, which was a surprise to us. It was very welcome & perhaps evidence again of the power of focusing on what’s working well, making adjustments, taking action & letting go of things that are outside of our control.

“Don’t count the days, make the days count.” ~ Muhammad Ali

I think that’s appropriate for where we’re all at inside & outside of business at the moment.

We’ve all experienced some great challenges recently but with great challenges come great & equal benefits & opportunities.

Which direction we’re all facing will determine more than anything else where we land & thrive as our world moves forward once again.

Which umbrella we place ourselves under is our choice, which is pretty exciting.

Choose wisely my friends, our fate is as always in our own hands.

What’s Going To Stop Me

The problem-solving skills that define us as entrepreneurs empowers us to not only succeed in business but to succeed in life.

I received a great quote today in my email that read

“A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.” ~ Franklin D Roosevelt

Isn’t that the truth?

pexels-photo-1330219

It’s funny how our (mine & Tom’s) work rate has not decreased in the past few weeks. Our workflow may have had to be adjusted i.e. more planning, finding alternative ways to source profitable books etc but we didn’t have any additional time off.

As we worked away in our home office, major blessing by the way, I was sometimes a little envious of our neighbours sitting outside sunbathing & having BBQ’s with time off but then I remembered why we’re doing this.

Building and refining our Book Arb business over time will allow us to sit outside & sunbathe for a lot longer than just a few weeks with the added bonus of financial security.

This is not to imply we’re better than any of our neighbours. We are just fortunate to have such a wonderful opportunity to create & to build wealth for our present & our future.

Where else in the world is it possible to create wealth starting with just $5 investments (books) & to roll it over many times in one year to create thousands of percent ROI?
To leverage a proven system from home that is highly automated, systematic in a rinse & repeat way?

pexels-photo-3184291

That comes with a world class support system built in & twice weekly live question & answer calls? With an email support team that are successfully doing the same business independently themselves & offering expert advice & support?

I don’t know about you, but I really appreciate where we are & the jackpot we have hit with this system & community.

If there weren’t a few waves along the way, then we wouldn’t have the opportunity to enjoy the inevitable momentum that comes with riding those same waves. Those are exhilarating!

The problem-solving skills that define us as entrepreneurs empowers us to not only succeed in business but to succeed in life. Those skills spill over into our every day lives.
In other words, a win here is a win everywhere in our lives. Try that on for size.

How does it feel to have a win everywhere in your life today by showing up in your business?

pexels-photo-322335

I was speaking with a friend last week who said something that I thought was brilliant. She is currently entering into a new career & she said, “What’s going to stop me from doing this?” For me that is how success is achieved in one word, it is a decision!

Remember, we are not only looking for smooth seas, as lovely as those are, we are also looking for those challenges that make us flex our muscles which helps us to create more of the life we desire for ourselves.

So today, ask yourself what skill can you develop in your Book Arb biz that will bring you a step closer to living your life your way?

Think about it & then do it. You’ll thank yourself in the long run.

1% Improvements

We broke down each piece of our business & asked ourselves, “how can we improve this piece of our business just 1% today?”

Hey Friends. Good to see you again. It’s been a while.

So, it turns out that my involuntary timeout has been a wonderful blessing. It gave us some time to think about our Book Arb business in a whole new way which has led us to the opportunity to systemise our business in ways we hadn’t even thought of before. Now that’s a big win!

female engineer using laptop

It’s funny how when challenges come we usually resist them. We tend to approach them like something has gone wrong when really it is just another opportunity for something to go even better – if we take the time to look for it.

When Roger Babson said the following below I think he was really onto something.

“When things goes wrong, don’t go with them.” ~ Roger Babson

We decided to take the time to think about how to make improvements on what we’ve built already.

We broke down each piece of our business & asked ourselves, “how can we improve this piece of our business just 1% today?”

graphs job laptop papers

This question has revolutionized our approach & made it way easier to achieve. Think about it. If any of us make just 1% improvement on our business every day, that’s 365% improvement in our business over the next year. I’ll take that!

Typically, in life & business we are urged to take massive action to see massive results. It’s sound advice initially but it’s not sustainable unless we set up our businesses with expansion in mind.

Systemising our business means we don’t have to take more action to achieve more results, it means that adding improvements to our system 1% at a time allows it to work harder, not us.

That’s why for us considering ways that we can improve each step of our business in a 1% way feels easier, consistent & automatable. No rushing around, just consistent improvement.

We’re just building our road of gold in a 1% way every day.

“Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.” ~ John Wooden

So, today ask yourself how can I make improvements in my book buying, book selling, returns, tracking etc & then set about implementing them in easy ways. Then watch what happens.

Accountability

The first person we are accountable to is ourselves! It sounds obvious, but do you hold yourself accountable? Well, let’s see…..

“In life we can have results or reasons. If you are not getting the results you want, your reasons are the lies that you keep telling yourself.” ~ Harald Anderson

When things are going well, do you take the credit for your life, your happiness, your success? Yes, I hear you say.

pexels-photo-2962135

When things are not going so well do you equally take the credit for your life, your unhappiness, your lack of desired results? The answer is (needs to be) yes for this too.

Many times we’ll take responsibility/credit when things go well but if things are not turning out as intended then it’s easy for our minds to blame something/somebody else, even a little bit as we lick our wounds.

All day long, we can usually find someone to agree that it’s not fair etc & if only this or that hadn’t happened….Sound familiar?

As with everything else, accountability begins at home – with ourselves.

Once we use the power of accountability for ourselves then we are in the position to join an accountability group, which in our experience, has had a profoundly powerful effect on our book arb business.

Every two weeks we meet online & discuss our wins, our challenges & brainstorm ways to solve those challenges in a spirit of collaboration, support, fun & getting results!

It is mighty for momentum, inspiration & it’s another level of holding ourselves accountable to ourselves & others.

pexels-photo-3153201

When you tell someone else what you’re going to do, it really does make you step up your game because you’ve said out loud what you’re going to do & you have to answer why you didn’t.

Wow, it’s confronting & inspirational when you create the right group of people around you that know your potential & cheer & gently challenge every step of the way to achieve your goals.

Being in an accountability group also allows for constant motion & momentum forward toward overall goals as these are achieved by attaining mini goals all along the way.

Another benefit too is that each others success breathes more success which breathes more success lol!

The collective expectation then enhances not only individual success but group success & voila….the circle of success is created!

Because our community is chock full of inspired entrepreneurs building the same business as ourselves it is easy to find & create a group for success around ourselves.

It’s yet another great reason that our business model works. There is massive collaboration in every success story, who wouldn’t desire that?

Next week, I’ll talk about the hot seasons for buying & selling for continuous success!

Deep Dive

Many times in our lives we learn new things to an intellectual level and assume we know a subject inside and out when in fact we don’t really know it all.

Knowing something on an intellectual level is useless. It can be entertaining discussing a topic at dinner parties but how often do we know a topic to the level of application & expertise?

Answer. Rarely!

We really only know a subject when we apply it in our lives i.e. we are living it.

“Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.” ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

In learning a whole new business model with Book Arbitrage at first I intellectually understood it i.e. buy low, sell high. Makes sense, right?

Understanding that & then doing it well took time.

It was only when I deeply immersed myself into my business to understand the ins & outs of it that I really ‘got it’.

businessman man desk working

This served me in two ways. First, I now understood every aspect of our business which meant I was applying what I knew. Crucial!

Next, I gained super confidence in my business application because I knew what I was doing on a deep level rather than a periphery intellectual one.

The benefits of this ‘knowing’ means that I am an expert in my own business. If I am not an expert in my own business then who is?

“Knowledge is useless without consistent application.” ~ Julian Hall

The next piece that adds momentum to knowledge is consistent use of it. Again, often times we can know what to do for a while & then life can seem to pull us in different  directions & we no longer apply what we know with the same intensity.

This is why deep immersion in an area of importance in our lives like business, so that it is a way of life, is the best strategy for success.

Certainly for those of us who are active in our Book Arb community we live our knowledge as a way of life by sharing our strategies, wins & challenges. We inspire each other to take more action with our consistent results.

people inside conference room discussing

This ensures consistent deep diving as our way of life & ongoing success.

We constantly sharpen our axes on each other which keeps our fires burning & ensures consistent application & growth on our journey to mastery.

Now, that is success!

“Surround yourself with greatness.” ~ Unknown

By surrounding yourself with greatness, you become great yourself & elevate others to their greatness too. That’s really living life to the full!

So ask yourself today, “Just how well do I know my business & how well am I applying what I know? Who have I surrounded myself with?”

Next, I will discuss how wonderful “mistakes” are in this business…..

The Benefits of Challenges

What if instead of balking at challenges and being guarded about them we welcomed them as the next building block for success? Would that change our perspective and our response?

Most people see challenges as something that is happening that should not be happening i.e. this isn’t fair, this shouldn’t be happening to me.

However, when you look back on your life, it will likely be that you did not go through unscathed and unerringly and that is a good thing. Life isn’t static and neither are we.

silhouette photography of boat on water during sunset

“Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.” ~ African Proverb

How could you ever learn to run faster as a child if did not you fall down or start off slow?

Yet, as adults we tend to veer away from life’s challenges as something unwanted. We seek to avoid them or desire someone else to sort it out for us. As children we just naturally problem solved i.e. got back up again.

As adults we tend to wrap a story around why we fell and whose fault it was, lol!

In our Book Arb business we have made tons of mistakes and that is how we have learned. Each time we have encountered a new challenge, we have had to learn to flex a new muscle and to eliminate the challenge and thereby become stronger.

That is why our business continues to grow because we continue to grow. It’s not an absence of challenges that brings this about but the very presence of them.

It’s called natural evolution. How could we become super successful unless we passed through the successful phase?

A life without challenge is like an ocean without a tide. It doesn’t exist. Nor do we really want it to.

scenic view of beach

What if instead of balking at challenges and being guarded about them we welcomed them as the next building block for success? Would that change our perspective and our response?

What if we celebrate the challenge as a fantastic way to grow ourselves and our business, answered prayers as it were, do you think the solutions would come easier and the whole journey would be made more fun?

“An obstacle is often a stepping stone.” ~ William Prescott

So if challenges are a good thing. Then surely the opportunity to find fun ways to interact with them is a good thing. We move forward and gain another victory – a good thing.

By eliminating them not as something unwanted but as making room for the next stepping stone our forward motion and success is assured.

When we bought books that were not that profitable, we learned to read the Keepa charts more accurately and to buy books that were more profitable. When we repriced in an unproductive way, we learned to reprice much more effectively. When we had gated books we found a solution for that. You get the point.

We have become more skilled at making money in our Book Arb business because we met challenges, not because we didn’t.

sunset beach people sunrise

That is why we are becoming so successful now. Plus, our road and learning curve to success has been made all the more pleasant and short by travelling this road with other book arbers who are also meeting and eliminating challenges in their businesses.

“Success is a continuing thing. It is growth and development. It is achieving one thing and using that as a stepping stone to achieve something else.” ~ John C. Maxwell

Next, I will discuss how creating financing for our business has changed my approach to life and the success we are experiencing…..

Learning From The Best

Why struggle to figure out how to get there when someone has already walked the path you are now walking and they can help guide you along the way.

“If you ask any successful businessperson, they will always (say they) have had a great mentor at some point along the road.” – Richard Branson

Mark Zukerberg, Bill Gates & Richard Branson have all talked about the benefits of learning from mentors.

No matter what stage your business is at, a start up, established and/or expanding, learning from someone who has done it before just makes sense.

It amazes me still how some people view asking for help as a sign of weakness instead of the smartest thing to do.

Why struggle to figure out how to get there when someone has already walked the path you are now walking?

The biggest investment you ought to make by far in any business is in yourself. No business plan or any amount of money can overcome a confused mind.

Think about it. You can have a co pilot in the plane with you who is vastly more experienced who can show you how to fly a plane or you can jump into the pilots seat by yourself and either crash & burn or take a lot longer to land safely at your destination. Your choice.

“One of the greatest values of mentors is the ability to see ahead what others cannot see and to help them navigate a course to their destination.” — John C. Maxwell

In our Book Arb community we have both coaches and mentors who are showing us the way in specific detail. Because they are in our industry and not just general business mentors they are keenly aware of the specific challenges we meet.

Their attitude to the person is “‘Let’s go do it,’ not ‘You go do it.’ How powerful when someone says, ‘Let’s!’” — Jim Rohn

In addition to all the other supports in our community this kind of mentoring delivers awesome reinforcement. Their intention as I continuously experience it is not just to empower us to make book arbitrage a successful business. They are actively developing entrepreneurs which goes far beyond this current business model.

Their vision is much more expanded than book arbitrage alone and it is a privilege to be a part of such conscious empowerment. Jon & Luke are changing lives forever.

“Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others.” ~ Jonathon Swift

They are changing the way we see ourselves and providing the practical steps to achieve our goals. It really is incredible.

If you are in the Book Arb community, in addition to buying books to grow your business, be sure to invest in yourself so that your business and you expand side by side.

That is the formula for success i.e. constant expansion and in our community success is the culture. How can we fail?

Next week, I will discuss the importance of challenges in your business and why they are a positive.

Radio Silence Up to Speed

When challenges come they are what is best for us i.e. learning curve, correct and continue and when triumphs come, we enjoy more achievements which equally build character and that is what is best for us.

If you will allow me I would like to bring you from radio silence all the way up to speed by sharing with you our journey since the late fall of last year.

red and blue hot air balloon floating on air on body of water during night time

Firstly, I must apologize for the prolonged radio silence that has occurred here. It was neither planned nor expected. We experienced some curve balls at the end of last year and equally amazing breakthroughs in our book business which speak to the challenges and triumphs of being in a business that comes with such certainty.

Perhaps, curve balls concentrate the mind and lead to bigger strides than one might imagine. It certainly has in our case. But then we have had a lot of help with this.

“When life throws you a curve ball, don’t let it knock you down and keep you down. Get up, re-adjust, brush yourself off, and keep it moving forward.” ~ George Bronner

Firstly, the curve balls. We had set up a campaign to bring this opportunity to more people as it has changed our lives completely and yes we were to be financially compensated for that. Being paid to help people, my favourite thing!

Even though we worked with some very talented people, after a lot of work and thousands of euro the campaign completely failed. I mean tanked utterly. It was a surprise to us and obviously disappointing as we poured ourselves emotionally, professionally and financially into this project.

Project Empowerment i.e. our social marketing campaign surrounding this opportunity came to a temporary hard stop. We had failed to reach the people we desired to help the most.

Next, Amazon changed some of their algorithms which impacted widespread stores in their larger store. This change which has since been fixed but went on for 3 months or more really effected the sales and momentum of our relatively small store.

“Failure is not to be feared. It is from failure that most growth comes.” – Dee Hock

So, when challenges come they are what is best for us i.e. learning curve, correct and continue and when triumphs come, we enjoy more achievements which equally build character and that is what is best for us.

In retrospect, this algorithm change also took care of a lot of our competition as we rode the wave and emerged unscathed. In short, everything is always working out for the best.

person typing on laptop

With this business we have found that all that is required is an internet connection and a work ethic to ensure all but certain wealth. Let me explain further.

Right when the firestorm was raging and our funds had been diminished and our store was at a temporary standstill we went to Atlanta (we live in Ireland) to meet up with our Book Arb community for their first ever live event. Talk about another game changer.

Here we met with Jon Shugart & Luke Sample in person and they far exceeded our expectations yet again in their genuineness and approach of going above and beyond to help our community. These guys have already made it and yet they showed up just to help us grow and to share all their tips and tricks with us. And to knock down even more hurdles, more on this later.

Furthermore, we met their mentors who have become our friends since and we didn’t just meet them, we spent the entire weekend with them learning from the best of the best how to make even more money in this business.

“Find a great mentor, someone who has already been through the many challenges of being an entrepreneur.” ~ Jodi Levine

To me, it was like having multiple Bill Gates teach us exactly how to grow our individual businesses with specific tools that expanded our businesses there and then. Did I mention this event was free?

That weekend of collaborative wealth building was another game changer in a long line of game changing experiences on this journey. The momentum since that weekend is still being felt by us.

Into the New Year, roll on another bumper textbook season in January and more epic sales and momentum for us may be worth a mention as our recovery built up some speed.

Whilst textbooks sell all year, as I shared before in previous posts, there are three bumper seasons where hundreds of millions of students buy extra books for college courses. We know what they are looking for and where to sell them.

I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet. Whilst we were in Atlanta, Jon & Luke launched new software which expanded our ability to sell more products other than books on multiple sites.

Now, we can sell a much wider range of products using the skills we have already developed in selling books and on more sites and not just Amazon. I still love selling on Amazon but being able to sell any number of products on any number of platforms means that we can make more profits and are no longer dependent on Amazon as our only marketplace which takes care of our recent challenges. Did I mention there was no charge for this either?

Whilst we are still focusing on our bookstore right now, because we are mastering our skills in this first, our horizon is expanding before our very eyes as these opportunities are available to us and to everyone in our Book Arb community.

“I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. But many others were also in the same place. The difference was that I took action.” ~ Bill Gates

Being in the right place at the right time doing the right thing with the right people totally rocks! I love it that it’s open to everyone too as there is no elitism in our community. Anyone with an internet connection and a work ethic can be as successful as they like.

There is still more to share about the past few months in the next post but I trust you are getting a sense of how blessed we feel to be where we are and to have the ability to do what we do. It isn’t rocket science, it’s step by step wealth creation with our friends.

Next, I will share more of our experiences that are thrusting us forward to our goals and how you can do it too.
