The Power of Mentoring

Whenever I have achieved exponential growth in my personal life or my professional life it is usually because of one of two things, I have immersed myself in the topic &/or I have been mentored.

Because I have experienced the power of coaching & mentoring in my life I am a big advocate of it.

Why struggle to do something new or to take our lives or business to the next stage when we can ask someone whose has already been there how they did it?

It’s not a sign of weakness to say I haven’t done this before, can you show me how you do it? It’s smart to find the fastest, easiest route to our destination.

As children we asked questions all the time when we were curious to learn something new but as adults we assume we should know everything.

Let me save you the bother. Nobody knows everything about everything so don’t fall into that trap.

But everyone (including you) knows more about some things than others. The trick in life as I see it is to find people who know more than you and/or are more experienced about a topic and learn from them.

I have been both coached and mentored in Book Arbitrage and that is why I am such a big fan of it. I am a product of it.

When I was asked to join the Mentoring Team I was deeply honored to be a part of this team that has made such a difference to myself and Tom both personally and professionally.

It’s wonderful to finally be achieving the kind of success we always dreamed about. If you know my story, you’ll know that wasn’t always the case!

We (myself & Tom) signed up for mentoring again last year. We had achieved our yearly goals ahead of time and were excited to kick our business on up to the next level.

I love being mentored as I mentor, for two reasons. One, obviously is to learn from someone who is further along the road. If I’m on the road to Memphis from Nashville why not ask someone whose made that journey and is now sitting in Beale Street sipping cocktails? Yum!

I find it’s invaluable to be able to ask someone whose made the trip what wrong turns they took so that we can avoid them and then consider where we are delaying ourselves now we are on the same road?

Since our mentors have traveled our roads before us, they can easily join those dots for us.

Everyone no matter how accomplished they become form habits that work and habits that don’t in their business.

The second reason is to become the best mentor I can be. I have got to keep learning and growing myself in order to help others learn and grow.

I have a quote that hangs on the wall in my office that says,

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” ~ Benjamin Franklin

That’s how success is achieved. By getting involved.

What you can do today and every day is immerse yourself in learning the processes of your business until you are an expert in them. That just makes sense, right?

Schedule time to reach out to others by posting in our private Facebook group where we are all are achieving alongside you. It’s true that we are who we spend time with and success is a way of life in our community.

Mastermind

Think about how the knowledge you’ve gained already, that you take for granted as obvious, could be the piece of gold that turns the key for someone else. When you share wisdom you acquire it.

Hello Friends. I thought I’d talk about the power of mastermind in creating our success.
Just about all the great success stories and leaders in their fields of any kind will attest to the fact that they had mentors and/or were part of a mastermind group.

It must make sense when we think about it, learn from others who are achieving what we desire to achieve.

In our Book Arb community, we are supremely blessed to have a huge Book Arb super-brain and mastermind group built in already. I absolutely love this. But this mastermind effect only takes effect when we plug into it, utilize it and contribute to it.

If I may, let me share an example of how this played out for myself and Tom.

Pre the August textbook peak season last year we were having a conversation with one of the other mentors. We were discussing how we were getting ready for August season. He said something to us that stunned us in it’s brilliance, simplicity and yet it had not occurred to us.

He asked us what our goal was for selling inventory during textbook season and we said ‘Oh, about 40% would be great, in one month,’ that was our expectation.

He said, ‘why not 100% of your inventory?’ I was stunned because as obvious as it was, it had not occurred to us. So that one conversation changed our approach and our results.

You may well ask, ‘did you sell 100% of your inventory?’ The answer is no, we sold 80.5% of our inventory. The cynic may say that’s nearly 20% off your goal but we were thrilled because we doubled what we previously thought was possible.

Our vision expanded with one conversation and now our sales are superior on an ongoing basis because our expectations have expanded.

So today, I am encouraging you to consider the value of this mastermind principle found in our community.

For me it’s like a massive sleeper asset that comes alive when we use it and contribute to it. This is what is in place already. We all have a wealth of experience and knowledge together which is powerful and unique to our niche market. We have world class support and answers to questions.

We are forging new highways of success in easier and faster ways by sharing our successes and we can elevate ourselves and one another in our collaborative approach to success.

I love how Richard Branson put it,

“Two heads are definitely better than one and by sourcing ideas from each other, you have a better chance of coming up with a strategy that will allow your business to overcome a setback or challenge.” ~ Richard Branson

Magic Happens

Magic happens when we take action & the most unlikely things can unfold when we don’t assume otherwise. Why not assume things will work out better than you imagined!

I shared in my post last week about the power of asking for help & giving to others as a prerequisite for success.

If I may, let me share with you how this has played out in my life.

Most recently, I have been asked to join the mentoring team in the book arbitrage community thereby realizing my life long goal of helping others create wealth quickly & easily.

The number of opportunities that this alone has opened for me is spell binding & very exciting. In my intention to give, I am receiving so much more in return.

This experience of receiving more than I thought possible has unfolded many times in my life & is why my life is rich beyond a financial figure, although I am very glad to say it now includes a financial figure too.

When myself & Tom went to Ethiopia on a humanitarian project some years ago, as part of a building project, every day we got up fired up to give more.

Everyday however, we were humbled by what the local community would share with us, given that they had so very little.

No matter how hard we tried, we just could not out give them in their kindness, love & compassion. It was overwhelming to us & life changing.

“Success isn’t about how much money you make; it’s about the difference you make in people’s lives” ~ Michelle Obama

In my other business some years ago, as I was so new & inexperienced, I thought I didn’t really have anything of substance to add to successful people, especially to a billionaire.

“What would I know?” was my thinking.

That was a mistake on my part. I had me & my experience with my friend & billionaire Bill corrected me on this.

I had met Bill briefly at a business conference. I had been struck by his success of course, but more by who he was.

I wrote to him & shared my admiration for who he was. I actually never expected him to get the email let alone read & respond to me but he did.

That began what some might say was an unlikely friendship of many years until Bill sadly passed away unexpectedly.

But, in my precious time with him, he valued me & who I was too. He even asked me to be a member of his board of advisers – me?

I was stunned & humbled by this honor. He valued who I was & that of course changed my life & the way I saw not only myself, but how I see everyone.

Everyone is valuable & has an immeasurable contribution to make to life, no matter their circumstance nor their starting place.

Magic happens when we take action & the most unlikely things can unfold when we don’t assume otherwise.

Why not assume things will work out better than you imagined. It takes the same amount of energy & it will orient your mind to success & great expectations which can then occur naturally around you.

Learning From The Best

Why struggle to figure out how to get there when someone has already walked the path you are now walking and they can help guide you along the way.

“If you ask any successful businessperson, they will always (say they) have had a great mentor at some point along the road.” – Richard Branson

Mark Zukerberg, Bill Gates & Richard Branson have all talked about the benefits of learning from mentors.

No matter what stage your business is at, a start up, established and/or expanding, learning from someone who has done it before just makes sense.

It amazes me still how some people view asking for help as a sign of weakness instead of the smartest thing to do.

Why struggle to figure out how to get there when someone has already walked the path you are now walking?

The biggest investment you ought to make by far in any business is in yourself. No business plan or any amount of money can overcome a confused mind.

Think about it. You can have a co pilot in the plane with you who is vastly more experienced who can show you how to fly a plane or you can jump into the pilots seat by yourself and either crash & burn or take a lot longer to land safely at your destination. Your choice.

In our Book Arb community we have both coaches and mentors who are showing us the way in specific detail. Because they are in our industry and not just general business mentors they are keenly aware of the specific challenges we meet.

Their attitude to the person is “‘Let’s go do it,’ not ‘You go do it.’ How powerful when someone says, ‘Let’s!’” — Jim Rohn

In addition to all the other supports in our community this kind of mentoring delivers awesome reinforcement. Their intention as I continuously experience it is not just to empower us to make book arbitrage a successful business. They are actively developing entrepreneurs which goes far beyond this current business model.

Their vision is much more expanded than book arbitrage alone and it is a privilege to be a part of such conscious empowerment. Jon & Luke are changing lives forever.

They are changing the way we see ourselves and providing the practical steps to achieve our goals. It really is incredible.

Maintaining Focus

I would ask you to reflect on where you lose your focus in your business. You will find it shows up in the same ways over and over until you address it.

Since no one can think for you or live your life the importance of maintaining your focus on your own horizon is essential.

Sometimes people around us are afraid we’ll fail and sometimes they’re afraid we’ll succeed. Either way their dominant focus is based on fear and if you allow that into your world, their focus on fear can influence you too.

For the most part we are surrounded by well meaning people. However, even when they share your goals & dreams their fears can distract you if you allow it and if you are not in charge of your own mind.

With our Book Arb community we are very fortunate to be surrounded by so many powerful leaders who are succeeding & their collective success is a persuasive example for individual success.

Since however, we are each responsible for our own journey, and there are many ways to continuously achieve that, it is possible to become distracted by other’s experiences.

It is vital to help others through your own achievement of success and not at the expense of it. It is easy to get caught up in helping others, especially when you live to serve, but it is vital to remember that you are in charge of your time and the ways in which you spend it. Period.

In the last blog I shared my work flow. In it you can see how important it is to prioritize achieving daily goals in order to achieve overall goals. Then you are in a position to help others. It’s about saying ‘Yes’ to the right things & equally important to say ‘No’ to other things i.e. demands by others.

This balancing act of growing my business & loving helping others is something of an ongoing challenge for me. I love love love to share what I am learning and what is working for me. It is the coach in me.

However, this is where my diluted focus can show up when this is out of harmony.

“As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself. The other for helping others.” ~ Maya Angelou

Helping myself is as important as helping others. That’s where my learning is.

By focusing on enjoying my own journey and helping others as I go, this allows me to experience my definition of success. Maintaining my balance in this is what brings fulfilment.

Do you lose focus when you don’t know what to do next and therefore procrastinate? Or does it happen because of other’s demands on your time be they family obligations or children? Is it because you have a very active social life?

“Focus on remedies, not faults.” ~ Jack Nicklaus

There is power in identifying where you leak focus because it will be habitual i.e. automatic. You can only change it when you see it.

What one thing could you change today that will help you maintain your focus in a clear way?

Once you are clear on the change you require, consciously create a new habit to combat it. For me, for instance in not answering emails or social media in the mornings, I achieve my goals first. Then I am in a position to help others.

Building Companions

Being surrounded by other leading edge creators of success in our chosen route for success ensures ongoing extraordinary results. Now that’ my kinda lane.

Who in your life is building a road of gold that inspires and challenges you to stride towards your destiny confidently? If it’s true and I think it is, that you become like the people you spend the most time with then who in your life is doing what you would love to do?

I implore you not to skip over this statement without due consideration. It’s obvious but is it obvious enough to you that you are living it in your daily life?

What is so exciting about book arbitrage for us is that when we signed up to build our book business, it came with building companions i.e. a community of conscious dream builders came in the package, tailor made. We didn’t have to go and find them.

Not only are we surrounded by others who have already gone where we are going, but we are building our visions simultaneously with others at our stage of the business and creating a drawbridge for those who come in behind us. Now that is awesome momentum.

I have been involved in personal development for over 25 years and in business for over 10 years and I have never experienced anything like the power of this mastermind group.

When I say mastermind, it’s a more informal experience than that but nonetheless powerful. Everyday lots of community members post inspirational milestones. We ask and answer questions for one another. We offer specific solutions for challenges that we have met and we share strategies for achieving life changing targets.

I realise that I have spoken about our powerful community in previous blogs. I cannot however, over emphasize the power of consistent attention and support to personal goals with a community of like minded individuals who are building their dreams in a shared area of growing expertise.

This industry is so lucrative and it’s why this platform exists and allows for powerful collaboration, encouragement, support, cheering and practical problem solving.

Since we participate in our community we experience real world expansion on a daily basis as a daily practice.

Sharing in the vision for success with other members of the community who are achieving our next level of success makes our achievement of it, all the more logical and certain.

I have stated before that this is by far the simplest system we’ve ever experienced for wealth creation. It is made all the easier by experiencing daily real world affirmation by knowing people personally who are achieving the kind of success we are aspiring to create.

It further makes it all the more normal and a by the by to expect phenomenal results and we do because we are surrounded by many more than 5 people who are on the same road as ourselves.  Success made certain is the only way to create success quickly and easily.

Happy Customers, Bottom Line

The bottom line is, having happy customers is our rock star approach to the delivery of service and results in our lives. Our store is growing and so are our ideas on how we can best serve. That’s thriving in our book!

When it comes to best business practice, having happy customers as a goal is unbeatable and automatically blows the competition out of the water i.e. meaning you will not have competition because your focus will be set on what you can give, not on what you can get.

When that is your vision, you cannot fail because you will pursue excellence and continue to be innovative in your service. When your bottom line is adding value to your customers they will automatically add value to your bottom line of fulfilment of purpose and of course financial rewards.

With book arbitrage we see our goal as sourcing great quality used books at great prices for our customers. We insist on selling only really good quality used books and return any books that don’t meet that criteria back to the sellers.

We pay extra to have our books checked for quality and improve and upgrade them where possible so that our customers enjoy a better quality book and experience. We enjoy phenomenal partnerships with our book prep centres who are as dedicated to great service as we are.

We strive to deliver the best we can at all times. Even when sometimes things go wrong outside of our power. For instance, just yesterday an unhappy customer contacted us to complain quite rightly that they had paid extra to have their book delivered with next day shipping.

It did not arrive on time. They asked to be reimbursed for the additional shipping. We promptly reimbursed them not only with the additional shipping but also with the cost of the book with our compliments. We value the experience our customers have with our store.

It’s probably safe to assume that this customer may return at a later date and choose our store over another, however, for us, knocking the ball out of the park as a standard operating procedure ensures that excellence is our modus operandi and that we are delivering on our commitment.

Having a higher vision for our book store makes these decisions easy and automatic. The cost of the book for us in this instance is minuscule compared with a happy customer. We are in charge of what we deliver. Period.

Having this approach has ensured that not only are our customers happy, but we enjoy a great quality of life because every day we are involved in a business that is of value and service to others which is thriving. What price can we put on that?

The bottom line is, having happy customers is our rock star approach to the delivery of service and results in our lives. Our store is growing and so are our ideas on how we can best serve. That’s thriving in our book!
