At last year’s live event Jon & Luke had t-shirts printed with Mindset is Everything on them. I think that captures success not just in business but in life.

We see the world as we are, not as it is – through our own filter – what we believe to be true.

If you think about it we all have our own internal GPS – our own thoughts & beliefs guiding us & depending on what it tells us we take action based on that.

Say our GPS is set up perfectly for San Francisco, it has always been right & got us where we wanted to go but now you’re looking to navigate New York City, but your GPS is stuck on the streets of San Francisco, how difficult would it be make our way around New York?

Think of all the alleyways & wrong turns we would take following our old GPS.
Mindset is like that. We’ve got to have it switched on to success, our destination or we could end up with bumps & bruises at best.

It’s a bit like the way we use our Book Arb software to find books. Depending on the filter settings we arrange we find different results.

With the way the training & ongoing support is set up we are guided to what kind of books to buy, when & how to sell them & as we master those, we are guided to the next part of the journey of our biz, up-scaling, outsourcing etc.

Having our success mindset switched on is key to being able to hear what’s being said & how we apply it otherwise we can still be navigating San Francisco in New York. We can be right all day long following our internal GPS but we’re not getting any closer to the statue of Liberty. In our case, success & profitable sales.

In our community we are being given the knowledge, the step by step of how to be successful. Our business model has come with it’s own GPS set for unlimited success.
So be sure that your internal map is set for success. It is already because you’re here in this community & you’re learning & taking action.

To maintain it, you have to constantly expand your success mindset. Our minds have to be fit, just like our bodies. Unfortunately, I never got any fitter by watching someone else work out. Or I can’t work out for the month of January & expect to be fit for the whole year, again, more is the pity.

Our mindsets require ongoing fitness/growth as our business is constantly growing.

Be proud that you have a bookstore. Be proud of your progress. Be delighted that you have a community of people who really want to see you succeed, because we do.

Remember to include working on your mindset in your daily workflow by reading/listening to inspirational material that will keep you inspired, learning, growing & challenged.

Smart Enough To Be Dumb

It’s not the things in life that we don’t know that thwarts our success most in my opinion. It’s when we think we know more than we do that trips us up.

Luckily for me I don’t have to try hard to be the dumbest one in any room.

That is not meant as a disparagement of me in anyway. I like it because it means I always remain open & I don’t assume I know more than I do.

“If you stay ready, then you don’t have to get ready.” ~ Will Smith

I am always ready to learn, to grow, to hear new points of view & to consider & absorb something new that hasn’t occurred to me.

“Progress is impossible without change & those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” ~Unknown

This idea has stood me well in life & because of it I have found myself in some pretty interesting rooms.

It’s not the things in life that we don’t know that thwarts our success most in my opinion. It’s when we think we know more than we do that trips us up.

This can mean that we are blind to our weaknesses, ignore warning signs of imminent change in a marketplace or can become complacent & slow our progress.

Think about it. When we’re reaching for new success we’re committed, hungry & inspired.

If we are no longer striving in some way then our ‘edge’ may be missing. This results not only in a slowing down of professional & financial success but much more importantly personal success!

In our Book Arbitrage Community I am fortunate to share time with some of the smartest people in the industry – Jon & Luke & the other mentors.

I remember reading an article written about Henry Ford when he was on the witness stand & the lawyer was trying to undermine his intelligence.

I thought his answer was genius.

“If I should really WANT to answer the foolish question you have just asked, or any of the other questions you have been asking me, let me remind you that I have a row of electric push-buttons on my desk, and by pushing the right button, I can summon to my aid men who can answer ANY question I desire to ask concerning the business to which I am devoting most of my efforts. Now, will you kindly tell me, WHY I should clutter up my mind with general knowledge, for the purpose of being able to answer questions, when I have men around me who can supply any knowledge I require?” ~ Henry Ford

Boom! That’s how I see myself. Not as Henry Ford but I am surrounded by a mastermind group who are excelling in my chosen field.

I learn from Tom. I learn from every other mentor.  I learn from my accountability group in Book Arbitrage.

I always learn something new when I go into our Community Mastermind Facebook group. I learn from every live session. I learn from every interaction with people I mentor.

I don’t call the people I mentor students. They are entrepreneurs. We are not working together to learn to be a professional student. We are working together to co create & foster entrepreneurial excellence in book arbitrage.

Not only that but our entire community is a Mastermind group for me because I learn from everyone without exception.

So you see. I don’t have to have all the answers. Phew! I am surrounded by them.

We are truly fortunate to have so many outliers, success stories & leaders of the industry in our community.

It’s our way of life. Like anything, it is important to apply what we learn & to contribute to our community in order to really thrive.

That is the Mastermind principle in action. When you give you receive.

Look Whose Growing..

True success for me is constant growth and having fun along the way. It’s not about grinding it out, it’s about playful creation at it’s core.

In order to grow your business you must grow yourself simultaneously alongside it to continue your success.

Your business success cannot exceed your knowledge or your abilities. I mean that just makes sense when you think about it.

You are the driver of the train. If you do not know that there are more miles that you can travel, you will stop at the next station thinking you’ve arrived.

Personal development however, allows you to see your journey ahead from a bird’s eye view & the expanded track beyond the next station before you is obvious.

Additionally, personal development doesn’t just allow you to form a bigger vision & achieve it, it saves you time & money enroute as Brian Tracy suggests

“Personal development is a major time-saver. The better you become, the less time it takes you to achieve your goals.”

So now it’s just not a wishy washy new age concept anymore. It’s a necessary business strategy to ensure we achieve the kind of success that we are capable of.

In book arbitrage beyond the mechanics of day-day buying & selling books which only takes a couple of months to learn really, or it did me at any rate, the most important skill I continue to learn is how to expand where I am now to create more value & more profit.

If I was not continuing on my journey of personal development this would not be possible or achievable.

I would not be asking myself those questions nor would I be comfortable challenging myself into new places.

We are inherently creative beings & coming from this place means we are open & playful & that’s how seemingly magical opportunities show up. Now that’s a hoot!

It’s never been as easy as it is today to listen to & read about success. It has become part of mainstream culture & is everywhere.

It could be a good idea then to listen to 10-15 minutes of inspirational material every day before listening to your favourite hits on your phone.

This one small change in your habit could ensure constant forward motion & this is how success is won – one piece at a time.

Deep Dive

Many times in our lives we learn new things to an intellectual level and assume we know a subject inside and out when in fact we don’t really know it all.

Knowing something on an intellectual level is useless. It can be entertaining discussing a topic at dinner parties but how often do we know a topic to the level of application & expertise?

Answer. Rarely!

We really only know a subject when we apply it in our lives i.e. we are living it.

“Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.” ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

In learning a whole new business model with Book Arbitrage at first I intellectually understood it i.e. buy low, sell high. Makes sense, right?

Understanding that & then doing it well took time.

It was only when I deeply immersed myself into my business to understand the ins & outs of it that I really ‘got it’.

This served me in two ways. First, I now understood every aspect of our business which meant I was applying what I knew. Crucial!

Next, I gained super confidence in my business application because I knew what I was doing on a deep level rather than a periphery intellectual one.

The benefits of this ‘knowing’ means that I am an expert in my own business. If I am not an expert in my own business then who is?

“Knowledge is useless without consistent application.” ~ Julian Hall

The next piece that adds momentum to knowledge is consistent use of it. Again, often times we can know what to do for a while & then life can seem to pull us in different  directions & we no longer apply what we know with the same intensity.

This is why deep immersion in an area of importance in our lives like business, so that it is a way of life, is the best strategy for success.

Certainly for those of us who are active in our Book Arb community we live our knowledge as a way of life by sharing our strategies, wins & challenges. We inspire each other to take more action with our consistent results.

We constantly sharpen our axes on each other which keeps our fires burning & ensures consistent application & growth on our journey to mastery.

Now, that is success!

Mentoring

There is nothing we cannot accomplish when we become experts at what we do & continue to grow in that. It just makes sense when we think about it, right?

Becoming a mentor in Book Arb is one of the most wonderful opportunities of my life.

I live to make a difference & to share what I know & am learning. I think to be of value to others is a privilege.

The above 2 quotes hang on the wall of my office. It is how we (myself & Tom) both love to live our lives i.e. in service of a bigger purpose.

Undoubtedly it’s one of the many reasons that success feels so delicious to us. It is shared.

Already, in a very short space of time, the role of mentoring has accelerated our results, not least of which because it caused me to re learn the basics so that I could teach it more succinctly.

In order to master any area of our lives, perhaps the fastest & most effective way to achieve that is to teach that subject.

Doing the right things in the right order at the right time i.e. doing the basics until they are second nature, is what separates truly successful people from others.

Too often people move on chasing the next big thing instead of excelling in what they are currently doing. This can cause mediocre results in both endeavors instead of extraordinary.

Focus & continuous action in one discipline at a time, over time brings huge rewards.

The Benefits of Challenges

What if instead of balking at challenges and being guarded about them we welcomed them as the next building block for success? Would that change our perspective and our response?

Most people see challenges as something that is happening that should not be happening i.e. this isn’t fair, this shouldn’t be happening to me.

However, when you look back on your life, it will likely be that you did not go through unscathed and unerringly and that is a good thing. Life isn’t static and neither are we.

How could you ever learn to run faster as a child if did not you fall down or start off slow?

Yet, as adults we tend to veer away from life’s challenges as something unwanted. We seek to avoid them or desire someone else to sort it out for us. As children we just naturally problem solved i.e. got back up again.

As adults we tend to wrap a story around why we fell and whose fault it was, lol!

In our Book Arb business we have made tons of mistakes and that is how we have learned. Each time we have encountered a new challenge, we have had to learn to flex a new muscle and to eliminate the challenge and thereby become stronger.

That is why our business continues to grow because we continue to grow. It’s not an absence of challenges that brings this about but the very presence of them.

It’s called natural evolution. How could we become super successful unless we passed through the successful phase?

A life without challenge is like an ocean without a tide. It doesn’t exist. Nor do we really want it to.

What if we celebrate the challenge as a fantastic way to grow ourselves and our business, answered prayers as it were, do you think the solutions would come easier and the whole journey would be made more fun?

So if challenges are a good thing. Then surely the opportunity to find fun ways to interact with them is a good thing. We move forward and gain another victory – a good thing.

By eliminating them not as something unwanted but as making room for the next stepping stone our forward motion and success is assured.

When we bought books that were not that profitable, we learned to read the Keepa charts more accurately and to buy books that were more profitable. When we repriced in an unproductive way, we learned to reprice much more effectively. When we had gated books we found a solution for that. You get the point.

We have become more skilled at making money in our Book Arb business because we met challenges, not because we didn’t.

That is why we are becoming so successful now. Plus, our road and learning curve to success has been made all the more pleasant and short by travelling this road with other book arbers who are also meeting and eliminating challenges in their businesses.

Maintaining Focus

I would ask you to reflect on where you lose your focus in your business. You will find it shows up in the same ways over and over until you address it.

“You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.” ~ Mark Twain

Since no one can think for you or live your life the importance of maintaining your focus on your own horizon is essential.

Sometimes people around us are afraid we’ll fail and sometimes they’re afraid we’ll succeed. Either way their dominant focus is based on fear and if you allow that into your world, their focus on fear can influence you too.

For the most part we are surrounded by well meaning people. However, even when they share your goals & dreams their fears can distract you if you allow it and if you are not in charge of your own mind.

With our Book Arb community we are very fortunate to be surrounded by so many powerful leaders who are succeeding & their collective success is a persuasive example for individual success.

Since however, we are each responsible for our own journey, and there are many ways to continuously achieve that, it is possible to become distracted by other’s experiences.

It is vital to help others through your own achievement of success and not at the expense of it. It is easy to get caught up in helping others, especially when you live to serve, but it is vital to remember that you are in charge of your time and the ways in which you spend it. Period.

In the last blog I shared my work flow. In it you can see how important it is to prioritize achieving daily goals in order to achieve overall goals. Then you are in a position to help others. It’s about saying ‘Yes’ to the right things & equally important to say ‘No’ to other things i.e. demands by others.

This balancing act of growing my business & loving helping others is something of an ongoing challenge for me. I love love love to share what I am learning and what is working for me. It is the coach in me.

However, this is where my diluted focus can show up when this is out of harmony.

“As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself. The other for helping others.” ~ Maya Angelou

Helping myself is as important as helping others. That’s where my learning is.

By focusing on enjoying my own journey and helping others as I go, this allows me to experience my definition of success. Maintaining my balance in this is what brings fulfilment.

Do you lose focus when you don’t know what to do next and therefore procrastinate? Or does it happen because of other’s demands on your time be they family obligations or children? Is it because you have a very active social life?

There is power in identifying where you leak focus because it will be habitual i.e. automatic. You can only change it when you see it.

What one thing could you change today that will help you maintain your focus in a clear way?

Once you are clear on the change you require, consciously create a new habit to combat it. For me, for instance in not answering emails or social media in the mornings, I achieve my goals first. Then I am in a position to help others.

Work Flow

Lining our ducks up in a row with our daily habits simply means more progress daily, weekly, monthly & yearly. That’s how we like things – simple, easy & effective.

Our daily work flow looks like this:

Buy & Sell

  1. Tom checks previous days sales, buy more if they are still hot.
  2. I check Keepa alerts in my email for profitable books.
  3. I check our hot list of year round sellers.
  4. I check this months shopping list for buying opportunities.
  5. I fire up Book Arb software for more opportunities if I have not spent our daily budget already.
  6. Tom reprices (Sells our books).
  7. Tom lists our books & takes care of admin e.g. returns.
  8. I go to give on Facebook to contribute to others & to help elevate success of our community.
  9. I attend live webinars every Tuesday & Thursdays afternoons.
  10. Wednesday mornings I write my blog.
  11. Thursday mornings I look at ways to expand our business e.g. sell on other platforms, learn new ways to accelerate our efficiency e.g. research faster processes for systemising etc.

Every second Monday night we attend our mastermind group to brainstorm ways to support & accelerate our businesses. Accountability is a powerful strategy in our group and this ensures our ongoing individual & collective success.

Repeating these daily habits over and over ensures that the fundamentals of our businesses are being met daily – we buy & sell books. Also consciously & actively looking for ways to improve our practices ensures steady growth.

Scheduling time to learn new information about our business/market & techniques for applying what we learn means that we are always growing – ourselves & our business.

Our work flow as we expand will change again but for now, this work flow is taking us from where we are to where we desire to go next.
